Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Thursday that he is considering legislation aimed at what he described as the “catastrophic risks” posed by artificial intelligence.
He said that lawmakers continue to weigh how Congress should respond to the rapidly evolving technology.
Cruz said AI presents significant opportunities but also serious dangers that require careful consideration as lawmakers debate potential safeguards.
“Look, it’s deeply concerning, and there are undoubted risks and catastrophic risks that AI potentially brings, and how the government deals with those risks and minimizes the chance of harm is a difficult policy question that Congress is wrestling with,” Cruz said in an interview with Politico.
The Senate Commerce Committee chair said legislation addressing those concerns is among the issues under consideration as the committee prepares for future debate.
But he stopped short of confirming whether he is drafting his own proposal or backing a specific measure.
“Among the topics we are looking at for the markup,” Cruz said when asked about legislation dealing with the risks.
Pressed on whether he was writing a bill or working with Democrats on bipartisan legislation, Cruz declined to provide details but indicated discussions are underway.
