The FBI says the shots fired Sunday afternoon at Donald Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, were fired in an attempt to assassinate GOP presidential nominee former President Trump.
Authorities say the incident began to unfolded at about 1:30 p.m. when a witness called police after spotting someone in the bushes along a fence at the Trump International Golf Club, about a 10-minute drive from his residence at Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
Secret Service opened fire at the suspect after seeing the barrel of the rifle protruding from the bushes, an agency official said at a press conference after the shooting.
Law enforcement name Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, as the suspect in the shooting.
Routh lives in Hawaii and is purportedly a shed builder.
The suspect was 300 t0 500 yards from the president, authorities also said.
The suspect was detained as he reportedly tried to flee on I-95 in a black Nissan.
Trump’s presidential campaign says the nominee is safe.
An AK-15 style weapon with a scope, a GoPro camera and two backpacks were reportedly recovered near the fence.
The news comes roughly two months after the Republican presidential nominee was shot during an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Campaign communications director Steven Cheung says Trump was safe.
