The immigrant whom Milwaukee County judge Hannah Dugan allegedly helped evade immigration authorities has pleaded guilty to being in the country illegally.
Eduardo Flores-Ruiz was charged with reentering the country illegally after being deported. Flores-Ruiz now faces up to two years in prison in a deportation agreement with prosecutors. Online records did not list a sentencing date for him.
He first entered the United States illegally in 2013, but was soon arrested and deported. He then returned to the U.S. before being charged in March with misdemeanor domestic battery.
Dugan, the judge of Flores-Ruiz in the misdemeanor domestic battery case, allegedly assisted the man’s evasion of immigration officials. She allegedly told him, “Wait, come with me,” before showing him to a special courtroom door after immigration officials showed up to arrest him.
Immigration officials later caught Flores-Ruiz after a footrace.
Dugan believed she was acting within her capacity as a judge, and is immune from prosecution.
