A majority of Americans expect the U.S. conflict with Iran to grind on for months or years, and more than three-quarters say the fighting has proved harder than President Donald Trump anticipated, according to a new CBS News/YouGov surveyreleased Sunday.
The poll lands as the fighting escalates again and gas prices weigh on households, and it captures a public that is frustrated, uncertain, and increasingly skeptical that the White House is leveling with them about the Strait of Hormuz.
Asked how much longer the war will last, 1% of adults said days and 8% said weeks, according to the CBS toplines.
Another 37% said months, 21% said years, and 33% were unsure.
Combined, 58% see no quick exit, a striking gap from Trump’s early prediction that the campaign would be short.
Seventy-six percent said the conflict has turned out harder than the administration expected.
The public also wants out.
Sixty-seven percent said the U.S. should end the war now, while 33% said Washington should press on until Iran makes further concessions.
