Flint City Councilman Leon El-Alamin was arraigned Monday on a new felony charge of election law — false swearing, according to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors allege El-Alamin made a false affidavit, or swore falsely under oath, to qualify as a candidate for elective office. Court records show the charge stems from April 12, 2024 — nearly three weeks after he was appointed interim first ward city councilman to succeed Eric Mays. El-Alamin later won an election that November to complete Mays’ term.
Second felony case pending
The new charge comes as El-Alamin awaits a separate trial in a felony assault and domestic violence case. That trial was set to begin last March but has been postponed several times to October. In that case, prosecutors accuse El-Alamin of pulling the hair of and choking a woman during a dispute in July 2025 at a home in Mt. Morris Township. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the felony assault charge.
El-Alamin denies allegations, plans to continue campaign
El-Alamin denied the allegations in both cases.
In a statement, he said, “I hope that they are looking at all candidates with this same level of intensity as they are me. When this thing started it was supposed to be about an alleged domestic violence incident which is false. Once they realized that failed because it’s not true. Now they are coming with this. This is all a smear campaign to hurt me in my election.”
