Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz invited President Donald Trump Tuesday to visit his state amid widespread protests and a federal investigation related to immigration operations, in order to help “restore calm and order.”
The invitation comes the same day that the Justice Department subpoenaed five Minnesota officials, including Walz, as part of the Justice Department’s investigation into the obstruction of ICE. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey were also subpoenaed.
“Mr. President, Minnesota invites you to see our values in action,” Walz said in a statement on X. “Come see how communities from all walks of life are working together, and how the spirit of this state refuses to be defined by division of fear. I invite you to join me, and others in our community to help restore calm and order and reaffirm that true public safety comes from shared purpose, trust and respect.”
The invitation comes as tensions in Minnesota increase over recent shootings involving federal immigration officers. One ICE agent fatally shot a woman earlier this month who drove at the agent with her car. Democratic Minnesota officials argue that the shooting was unjustified, while federal officials counter that the agent acted in self-defense.
