President Donald Trump on Monday said it was an “honor” to be the sitting chief executive when the Supreme Court ruled to increase “Presidential Power at a time when it is most needed!”
In a pair of Truth Social posts, Trump celebrated the court’s decision in what he called the “Slaughter Case,” saying it confirmed the president’s constitutional authority under Article II to remove executive branch officers and agency appointees.
“BIG WIN at the Supreme Court,” Trump wrote. “It is such an Honor to be the sitting President who won this Historic and Unprecedented Ruling, one of the most important ever given with respect to Presidential Powers.”
In a follow-up post, Trump said the decision overturned “90 years of precedent.”
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling on Trump v. Slaughter effectively overturned the 1935 Humphrey’s Executor decision, which had limited presidents’ ability to remove leaders of independent federal agencies without cause.
Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts concluded that such job protection violate the Constitution’s separation of powers by improperly restricting the president’s executive authority.
